Start-up of the Gas Preparation Plant to fill in the marine sections of the Northern Stream gas pipeline

The Gas Preparation Plant (GPP) to fill in the marine section of the Northern European gas pipeline was officially started up on September 6th, 2011; Group of Companies RusGazEngineering contributed to constructing the pipeline by design, delivery of packaged equipment, installation supervision and pre-commissioning. The Plant was started within the festive occasion held at the Portovaya Compressor Station near Vyborg, Leningrad Region, to mark the initial fill of the first Northern Stream line with natural gas.

Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, pushed personally the start button in the GPP control room. Apart from the prime-minister, Il'ya Klebanov, Authorized Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the North-Western Federal Okrug, Georgy Poltavchenko, Governor of Saint-Petersburg, Alexei Miller, Chairman of OAO Gazprom Board, Gerhardt Schroder, Chairman of the Nord Stream Committee of Shareholders and Matthias Warnig, Managing Director of Nord Stream AG took part in the event.

The Northern Stream gas pipeline is a principally new route to export the Russian gas to Europe. For Russia this Project is important both in terms of its economics and its politics. The gas pipeline passing through the water area of the Baltic Sea from the Portovaya Bay to the German coast will deliver gas to Europe bypassing the Ukraine and Byelorussia.

The filling-in of the gas pipeline using the GPP is the needed final technological stage prior to commissioning the first line of the Northern Stream gas pipeline, which will take around one month. The plant operated successfully at the start-up stage. On September 11th the first technological gas hit Germany. The participation of RusGazEngineering in such large-scale project was a landmark event verifying our reliable reputation.
